All physicians who intend to be accepted in a residency program in the United States, or study a medical specialty or subspecialty, are required to take the Step 1 version of the test if they eventually want to obtain their license for practicing medcine in the US.
The USMLE consists on three phases that complement each other and covers the Basic science curriculum of the first two years of medical school.
The test is based on the Basic principles of Anatomy, Biochemistry, Physiology, Pathology, Micro Immunology, Pharmacology, and Psychology. It’s also computer-based and consists of 350 questions, divided in 7 sections, 50 questions each.
The test taker has 8 hours to answer all the questions, and that includes a 60 minute break. Once a section is completed, there’s no way to go back to it.
